Wow--many fine choices, but dawg it all--how can ya not put the iconic 1941 Citizen Kane near the top of the list??

Well I hate this--the embed was disabled--ya'

I think I've seen this movie a good half dozen times. The first was in high school in a film history class (can you believe high schools used to teach film and art history?). It was also at the top of the list in another film class in college, so I know it like the back of my hand. A true blue American classic. Hard to believe Welles was only 26 when he made this. What I love best about him is he had a purity of vision and never compromised it for anyone. An auteur long before the French made up the term.

Amen Moi
An' Welles also hep to write it--what insight he had...the tracking scenes, the foreground/ background interplay-- all the incredible technique that could be brought to bear when "limited" to B&W.

We had "film studies" as a segment of humanities for the non-art students. A great prof taught a semester's worth of "how to look at a movie."

I shudder to think what our statist skools is teachin about "art" these days.

Dear God what would the country be like now if we had a media with these principals. Our leadership is all the jokers surrounding Kane saying not to profess the principles in case he cant do it. WEAK!

to moi's comment - you know there isnt even civics anymore?

good choice aunty - it certainly should have been someone's choice. i was bummed by how many youtubes were disabled too. grrrrrr

happy MCW

Good morning Aunty Belle,

Good choise. The first time I saw this was in a film class. That class and movies like this showed me how to appreciate black and white films.

K9 is right, just think what the country would be like if the media actually had principals.

So sorry that I totally missed this on MCW. Great choice. Although I always thought the Redbud thing was fairly lame for some reason. So powerful and then that?
