MCW:Coming of Age

I'se headed out on the road, so reckon I need to post MCW early. Be back directly. y'all hold the fort!

Kudos once again to
Milk River Madman fer hostin' this popular meme--Movie Clip Wednesday. This week's theme is Comin' of Age movies. Follow the link an see who all played this week--visit their blogs to see what movie they offer fer this theme.

I got two fer yore consideration:

When Johnny Depp weren't yet a dip, he starred as Gilbert Grape, a fella whose comin' of age were fraught wif' every manner of challenge. If ya crave more, Di Caprio turns in a fine performance as an endearin' mentally handicapped young chile', Gilbert's kid brother. Fer no other reason than this--Depp and Di Caprio as young sprouts-- it's worth yore time. I seen this movie more'n three times--it has a lot to say.

Since Holden Caulfield is gigantic bore, I spared y'all that one. Instead, here is
The Summer of '42

It was a simpler time--now days 15 year olds upload their own racy pictures to face book, they din't have to look at medical books to figger thangs out. This movie is a classic comin' of age, when some age was still an innocent possibility. Now first graders have textbooks that teach safe -sex. I'se sorry fer the kiddies, no mystery, no romance, no Summer of '42

Auntie, these are excellent choices. Gilbert Grape is a wonderful movie on many levels.

But, let's talk about Summer of '42. My dad loved this movie. He was about the age of the boys depicted around about 1942. Too young for WWII but a child of the depression. Thanks for triggering a few memories of my dad that I didn't realize had filtered to the bottom of the memory pile.

... if we took these pictures down to old man ? at the pharmacy to be developed we'd be sent to reform school ....

Funny Aunty how this one sentence sums up a whole lot of change. Not all of it for the better.

A fine choice, happy travels.

Good afternoon Aunty Belle,

I haven't seen Gilbert Grape. Summer of '42, what an excellent movie it was. I can remember having a crush on Jennifer O'neill after seeing it.

Safe trip!

I haven't seen Gilbert Grape either but I talk at length about Summer of '42 over at the Buzzkill. I think this is the best of the best for coming of age movies.

Happy MCW!

I haven't seen either. When am I supposed to find the time to watch all of these great movies. There was a time when I was an avid movie watcher (and reader) but alas those times are gone. Travel safe.

The Troll is back. Interesting theme. I've seen neither.

"The River's Edge" is the first one to pop into my trollish head.

Gilbert Grape has always been one of my favorite movies. Great performances by both Depp and DiCaprio, who really is quite a good actor. Unfortunately, his public persona gets in the way of that fact sometime. Hope your travels are safe and productive!
