What We Seen at Shiloh

Granny, tenderly know round heah as "Mimi-cita," gits herself a fit of cabin fever onc't in awhile.

So, to hep her out, me and a fambly member rode her up the road a piece to Shiloh...that'd be the crow crossin' to the west of Micanopy (Home of the famous ole' book store, O'Brisky's .) Shiloh is famous fer they daylillies.

Now ya'll can see right off this is a secret spot fer those in the know--not jes' anybody can find Shiloh--sorta like a scavenger hunt through backwoods Floridy.

But onc't ya git back in heah, oh mercy, but it is full of lovely, ole-timey places, like this heah main house of Shiloh Daylillies.

This is one endearin' ole Floridy homestead.

Ya' cain't find this sorta thang jes' anywhar'.

Mimi-cita cain't make it through the grounds on her walker, so the man-around-the- place kindly squired her about in his golf cart. Mimi swooned over this pink rose.

The garden is higgledy -piggledy, and thas' part of its charm....

We found us a few fine specimens and then went on down the road a piece to the next place....stay tuned.

How lovely! I adore gardens-gone-out-of-bounds. It's like going on a treasure hunt. Day lilies are one of my favorite flowers, too, and they generally do well here in New Mexico. My own stand struggles, though. I think I need to move them.

Oh, I really love those trees with things hanging from them.. what are they? So beautiful. We just don't get such lushness in my part of the world. I could almost smell those flowers.

"higgledy piggledy" garden IS charming.

Moi, Sugar Pie, I wish't ya could see these thangs--they had lillies is colors that I ain't seen in no other gardens. Might try a bit of bone meal and blood meal on yours--thas' the tonic round heah, since our soil is so sandy.

Anon Boxer, Sweet Chile' them 'thangs" hangin' in the trees is spanish moss.

Ya'll is invited to come on down heah fer a foray into the Floridy Backwoods. We'll git the South Floridy Troll-Stud to escort us, and haul Miss She-Pup down too, as her has an affinity fer the offbeat.

Natcherly all the rest of ya'll is MOST welcome--I do think we need a Blog Summit.

That is beautiful.
I visited a Krishna daylilly farm festival years ago somewhere in the area.
Tried fried daylilly blossoms ... once was enough.

Pretty stuff. Shiloh Search Results:

1) Tiny "town" in far east Hillsborough County near Plant City.

2) A tiny village in North Brevard that was annexed into the Cape Canaveral Space Center.

3) Aunty's Shiloh somewhere near Micanopy can't be found.

4) One zillion churches with the name Shiloh in their name.

Heh..Oh Troll, I luvs ya! Ya never can know when Aunty is spinnin' a yarn, or tellin' thangs straight. But, this time it is straight.

Shiloh is no town no more. Died in late 1800s. All that is left homesteads whose original deeds said "Shiloh". The postal address of folks in Shiloh is now Micanopy.

BUT, ya really can find it:

"Among the stops on the tours are a few special treats, such as Ocklawaha River cruises every 90 minutes on Friday and Sunday and the first Farmland Preservation Festival in rural Shiloh in northwest Marion County."

"Both The Nature Conservancy and the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission have identified the Shiloh Forest - Price’s Scrub area as a conservation priority. These sites are also highlighted in the Natural Areas Inventory of Marion County. Rare/endangered species resident in the area include fox squirrel, kestrel, sandhill crane, gopher tortoise, indigo snake, alligator, pondspice, greenfly orchid, and green adder’s-mouth orchid. Bald eagles and wood storks and other wading birds feed here. Bears and panthers occasionally move through this wildlife corridor and bear experts believe the culvert under I-75 here may be significant for dispersal between coastal and interior populations."

The tiny forgotten back-road of old farms is in NW Marion county, home of Kentucky Derby /Belmont winner "Needles" and KD winner "Sliver Charm."
