Or "No one remembers her beginnings" (Rubyfruit Jungle)
And "The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there." (The Go-Between)
"It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen" ( 1984)

Say hey to all my kin, Aunty, and have a safe trip!
Damn Rubyfruit Jungle. Sigh, now she's writing cat detective stories.
Fudge.
Have a wonderful trip Aunty and don't be working too hard ya hear.
oh, I'd sure love to know what you're out there doing.
xoxo.
Come back soon.
‘To be born again,’ sang Gibreel Farishta tumbling from the heavens, ‘first you have to die.’
Enjoy the trip!
sittin' the airport waitin' on connection....
JJ, I'll do it!!
Big Shamu...heh, is she? no way. Well, youse figgered by now that Aunty is a straightlaced matron, but Rita Mae and Dorothy Allison (Bastard out of Carolina) and Kaye Gibbons (Ellen Foster) all wrote remarkable novels that were cathartic for they own sad childhoods. Survivors.
Gypsy!! Thanky --I check in heah and theah
Anon Boxer Babe!! Heh...jes' writin and yakkin'
Awesome! Hope your trip goes smoothly. And weigh in on my latest post, if you get a chance.
Two of my fave opening lines:
"I am doomed to remember a boy with a wrecked voice . . ." John Irving, A Prayer For Owen Meany
"There is no way, unless you have unusual self-control, of disguising the expression on your face when you first meet a dwarf."
C.J. Koch, The Year of Living Dangerously
"Always leave them laughing when you say goodbye".
`George M. Cohan
Devil squirrels on my porch. Send in the troops!
The Big Shamu
Longest day ever!
Sittin in Phoenix waitin' on connection...arrggh!
Ya'll have no IDEA how hard it is to be , uh, that other woman, instead of "Aunty."
Moi, Cherie, I'se comin' to see yore newest post. But..OWEN MEANY??? I love that book. The bookish ladies read it years ago and count it still among our favorites.
Love all ya'll first lines--but gotta dash the plane is here.
(we could do a blogger book club!)
Later...
For some reason that drawing reminds me of Duck Tales :) Not sure why? hehe Have a safe Trip!
I have just returned from a visit to my landlord - the solitary neighbour that I shall be troubled with.
As I walked through the wilderness of this world, I lighted on a certain place where was a Den, and I laid me down in that place to sleep: and, as I slept, I dreamed a dream.
As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams, he found himself transformed into a giant insect.
I had the story, bit by bit, from various people, and, as generally happens in such cases, each time it was a different story.
